Chicago Drop-off Regulations

Official requirements from the city sanitation department

Important: Read Before Disposing

For residential properties (1-4 units) serviced by the City of Chicago's Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS), mattresses are collected as bulk items. No appointment is explicitly required for bulk item pickup; residents should place mattresses at the curb or in the alley on their regular bulk collection day. The City of Chicago DSS does not explicitly state a requirement for mattresses to be wrapped in plastic for curbside collection. For properties not serviced by DSS (e.g., larger residential buildings, commercial properties), disposal must be arranged through a private waste hauler.

Illegal dumping fine: Not less than $1,500 nor more than $2,500 for the first offense; not less than $2,500 nor more than $5,000 for the second and each subsequent offense (per City of Chicago Municipal Code 7-28-065).
