Los Angeles Drop-off Regulations

Official requirements from the city sanitation department

Important: Read Before Disposing

Los Angeles Sanitation & Environment (LASAN) provides free bulky item collection for residential customers. Mattresses and box springs are accepted as bulky items. A critical requirement is that all mattresses and box springs must be wrapped completely in plastic and sealed (e.g., with tape) for bed bug prevention before placement at the curb. Collection is by appointment only, and residential customers are typically allowed up to four bulky item collections per calendar year.

Illegal dumping fine: Up to $10,000 for a first offense, with potential jail time of up to six months and responsibility for cleanup costs.
